I came across this almost by accident on Google a while ago, and it is now posted on nearly 125,000 Google results. On this it appears a new email scam started around 2 years ago, whereby the name of a a reputable long established Company, is offering a job whereby the recipient is sent cheques to bank, and in return takes a 10% commision. Unfortunately, when investigated further many potential victims find out that whilst the cheques are legitimate and so is the unknowing Company stated, the bank accounts and jobs are not, and hence a potential money laundering scheme. It is unclear how many victims there have been, but one thing is clear the story has gone viral!
Details of the letters have been posted an many "fraud Websites" and personal blogs, with many other pages copying content to warn other potential victims. There are several different Companies used, but a common trend is that the published letter details what that Company does and often shows a working real link to the Company website. If this is a real scam then I sincerely feel sorry for the victims and the associated companies, one of which is a competitor of ours. However, the little cynical voice in my head, you must have one too, either that or I am going mad, is screaming - do you know what it is saying?
It is saying that the articles clearly make out that the Companies involved are victims, and so despite the nature of the posting, these Companies should suffer little negative feedback.... all publicity therefore is good publicity, and publicity they are getting, the cost of generating 125,000 website links and product details both in terms of time and money is phenomenal - I estimate if all 125,000 results are independent links it would take my current level of SEO 30 years - so is this story real or just awarding winning SEO, why link build when a story gone viral can take it to unchartered levels!
But that is just the little voice in my head, the article could well be genuine, and there could really be victims, well deserved of the pity and support, and these viral posting are doing the world a service by letting internet users know about them. If that is so then well done you information and weblog sites for letting us know, and sincere support to the victims.
If the little voice in my head is right .... well done also ................. whoever you are!
